Day Two Wrap – Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games

Another day of success in Saly, Senegal for Thomas Turner (QLD) and Ryan Edgar (QLD), who continued their winning streak at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.

The Australian pair finished on top of their pool with straight-set victories over Saudi Arabia and Kazakhstan.

In their 2-0 (21-15; 21-11) win against Saudi Arabia, the pair started strongly in the first set and controlled the match from start to finish.

The momentum carried into the afternoon, where they defeated Kazakhstan 2-0 (21-15; 21-16).

“We’re just pretty chuffed to be topping the pool. Winning three games, six out of six sets – we’re just happy,” Edgar said.

Turner said this dream start was the first goal on their path towards a Youth Olympic medal.

“At the start of the tournament, the goal is to top the pool, so we get an easier route through the crossovers to the finals. We’re playing teams we’ve played before and just to see that we’re still developing at the same rate as the other teams, if not more, is cool,” he said.

With three days left in their six-day campaign, the pair now move into the round of 16. Turner said their training in their home state of Queensland, host of the 2032 Olympic Games, has given them an edge in the heat.

“Where we live is reasonably hot, so it helps. In our training and preparation, we knew it was going to be hot. We did a lot of conditioning.

“We are in a really good spot fitness-wise. We can last long and we’re happy to play the multi-phase rallies and let the game go on longer and outlast other teams,” he said.

Next up, they face the Democratic Republic of the Congo, again in the afternoon Senegal sun.
