Pirates captain Kylee White ready for another Mahindra Super League season
Starting setter and long-time captain of the Queensland Pirates, Kylee White is set to return to the Mahindra Australian Volleyball Super League in 2024.
Running from August to October, the Australian Volleyball Super League will bring together the country’s best indoor players over the exciting new format launched last year.
Having debuted in the Australian Volleyball League in 2016, White is looking forward to returning for her sixth season with Queensland.
“I’m really excited for this year, especially since we now know what to expect having played a full season of the new format last year,” said White.
“You know how exciting the power plays are, that your team could be down but easily come back and close the gap.”
With the majority of the 2023 Pirates squad returning for the 2024 season, White says that the team is looking forward to reinforcing their relationships on and off the court.
“I’m really looking forward to the season and having a great group of girls to share the court with,” said White.
“We do have Emma Burton back this year which is exciting, she only played one game with us last year because of the national tour and is definitely a key player.
“We’ve also got a couple of newbies so it’ll be great to welcome them into our culture and our playing style. I think they’ll fit in really well with the team.
“Because our team is pretty established, continuing to build on our culture that we’ve created over the past few years will be a big focus for us this year.
“When you’ve got a team that’s gelling well together and that has minimal distractions off court it ends up having a really positive effect on court as well.
“We’ll continue building on those friendships and our trust as a team so on game days we can focus on playing our best,” she said.
White and the team are excited to challenge for that top spot on the ladder this year, noting that they’re already preparing to come up against some tough competition.
“We’d love to win gold – that’s always our goal,” said White.
“Obviously you have to put in the work and take it week at a time, you can’t focus solely on the end result.
“You’ve got to focus on doing everything you can to your full potential both as individuals and as a team so that when it comes to finals you can collectively perform at your best and hopefully come away with the win.
“We’re expecting Perth Steel to be very strong as they have been for the past couple of years – they dominated the final last year which was insane.
“Overall, it’s really exciting to see how far women’s volleyball has come and I couldn’t be more excited for the season ahead.”
The first Queensland Pirates opening game of the season will take place on 1 September against Melbourne Vipers when Sunday afternoon volleyball returns to Iona College.
