Second leg of Australian Beach Volleyball Tour relocated and rescheduled due to flooding conditions impacting the Murray River area

After careful consideration of the ongoing flooding conditions impacting the Murray River area, Volleyball Australia (VA) has made the difficult decision to move and reschedule the second stop of the 2022/2023 Australian Beach Volleyball Tour, originally expected to take place between 17-19 February at Cobram, VIC.

The event will be held at Lyneham Beach Facility in Canberra, ACT between 27-29 January, 2023 instead, with the Australian Beach Volleyball Tour competition run in conjunction with the Australian Junior Beach Volleyball Tour, which is taking place at the same venue on 25-26 January, 2023.

The decision of relocating the Cobram-Barooga Classic was taken due to the ongoing high water and flooding conditions of the Murray River caused by excessive rainfall and melting snow, which over the last few weeks have caused significant damage and flooding of Thompson Beach and the surrounding areas, including the carpark and the access road.

“It was a really tough decision to make, but the conditions of the area forced us to relocate the event for 2023,” said Volleyball Australia CEO, Andrew Dee.

“In previous years the Cobram-Barooga Classic has been a fantastic event and one of the favourite stops on the tour for many members of the volleyball community, so we are really looking forward to coming back to Thompsons Beach for the 2023/24 summer season.

“At the present time, our thoughts are with the communities of Cobram and the other towns along the Murray River, who continue to deal with the aftermath of major flooding, hoping they can recover as quickly as possible from all the damage they suffered,” he said.

The 2022/23 Australian Beach Volleyball Tour started last week (2-4 December, 2022) in Torquay, VIC as part of the Great Ocean Road Beach Volleyfest. After the rescheduled stop in Canberra, the tour will visit Wollongong, NSW (10-12 March, 2023) before heading to Coolangatta, QLD for the Beach Volleyball National Championships, which will take place between 24-26 March, 2023.
