Accreditation Requirements
A referee is accredited as a Volleyball Australia Level 1 Referee when they successfully complete the following requirements
- The candidate must be at least 12 years old to be eligible for this accreditation.
- Be a registered member of your State Volleyball Association.
- Completed the Play by the Rules modules:
- Harassment and Discrimination
- Child Protection – 18+ years old only
- Complete the Volleyball Australia Fundamentals of Refereeing online course.
- Agree and sign the VA Officials’ Code of Behaviour
This accreditation is valid for a period of 2 years as long as the individual remains a member of their state association.

A referee is accredited as a Volleyball Australia Level 2 Referee when they successfully complete the following requirements:
- The candidate must be at least 14 years old to be eligible for this accreditation
- The candidate must have a Volleyball Australia Level 1 Referee Accreditation
- Completed the Play by the Rules modules:
- Harassment and Discrimination
- Child Protection – 18+ years old only
- Be a registered member of your State Volleyball Association
- Attend the VA Level 2 face-to-face Referee course. This course is currently run via the state associations, please contact your state to find out when the next course is being run near you.
- Complete the Community Officiating General Principles Course
- Meet the required competencies for a Volleyball Australia Level 2 Referee. The minimum number of games required are:
3 games as a 1st Referee (1x assessment for competency)
3 games as a 2nd Referee (1x assessment for competency)
2 games as a Scorer
2 games as a Line Referee - Agree and sign the VA Officials’ Code of Behaviour

This accreditation is valid for a period of 4 years as long as the individual remains a member of their state association.

To achieve Level 3 accreditation, a referee can be nominated by their State Volleyball Association, Volleyball Australia’s Referee Committee, or themselves, in all cases, the nomination must be accompanied by a letter of endorsement from the State Association.
A referee is accredited as a Volleyball Australia Level 3 Referee when they successfully complete the following requirements:
- The candidate must be at least 16 years old to be eligible for this accreditation
- The candidate must have a Volleyball Australia Level 2 Referee accreditation
- Completed the Play by the Rules modules:
- Harassment and Discrimination
- Child Protection – 18+ years old only
- Be a registered member of your State Volleyball Association
- Meet the required competencies for an Volleyball Australia Level 3 Referee.
- Agree and sign the VA Officials’ Code of Behaviour
This accreditation is valid for a period of 4 years as long as the individual remains a member of their state association. This accreditation is currently managed by Volleyball Australia in conjunction with Volleyball Australia’s Referee Committee. To become a Volleyball Australia Level 4 Referee, candidates must fulfil the following requirements:
- The candidate must be at least 18 years old to be eligible for this accreditation
- The candidate must have a Volleyball Australia Level 3 Referee accreditation
- Completed the Play by the Rules modules:
- Harassment and Discrimination
- Child Protection – 18+ years old only
- Be a registered member of your State Volleyball Association
- Meet the required competencies for a Volleyball Australia Level 4 Referee
This accreditation is valid for a period of 4 years as long as the individual remains a member of their state association.
This accreditation is currently managed by Volleyball Australia in conjunction with Volleyball Australia’s Referee committee and is given via invitation only.
