2024 Australian Volleyball Schools Cup comes to a spectacular close

Celebrating its 40th year, the 2024 Australian Volleyball Schools Cup has come to a spectacular close, with 516 teams competing from 160 schools.

With over six days of thrilling on court action, the Gold Coast played host to 2,318 games taking place over 44 courts across four venues.

Volleyball Australia CEO Andrew Dee thanked the Queensland Government and Experience Gold Coast for enabling this event to take place and provide every participant with a wonderful experience.

“In the 40th year of Schools Cup, it is inspiring to see yet another record set for participation on the Gold Coast, with an impressive 516 teams playing from right across the country and New Zealand,” he said.

“This event brings together so many people who share the same passion and love for volleyball, whether that’s the athletes, coaches, parents and our volunteers.

“As we get closer to the 2032 Brisbane Olympics, it’s been exciting to watch the next generation of talented volleyballers come together to compete for their schools.

“We want to thank all the schools who travelled to the Gold Coast to compete in this event, and for investing so much of their time into preparing the teams.

“We also want to thank all our sponsors and partners, in particular Tourism and Events Queensland and Experience Gold Coast as well as our major corporate partners Scape Student Living and Mahindra Australia, without whom we could not deliver the size and scale of events like this for our volleyball community.”

Coach of the Year 10 Boys Honours silver medalists, Zoe A’vard knows her team from Rowville Secondary College in Victoria worked hard to earn their silverware.

“I don’t even think I could put it into words how proud of them I am,” A’vard said.

“They’ve worked from the very bottom all the way to the top, going from last for the past two years, to winning silver this year.

“Watching how hard they’ve worked all year and for them to accomplish exactly what their goal was even though they weren’t expecting it whatsoever, shows the kids where hard work can get you.”

After another positive experience at AVSC, Zoe is already looking forward to next year’s competition, where she hopes to be able to return with an even larger Rowville representation.

“I thought the AVSC was really good this year, it was really positive,” she said.

“I think that it was great seeing different schools get around each other, it was a lot of fun this year.

“We’ve been here for three years and are looking forward to coming back next year with hopefully a few more teams.”

Rising star Millie Mangan from the Cleveland Year 10 Girls Honours Bronze winning team, shared that the week was a great experience to bring together the volleyball community.

“Our final was pretty thrilling,” Mangan said.

“Everyone ran in at the end and it was just such a good way to end off the week on a high, and everyone played so well and I’m so proud of everyone.

“I think the atmosphere of AVSC is so great and just getting to see all your friends from other states brought together in one tournament is so fun to be a part of.”

Brighton Secondary School walked away as the overall Champion School, as well as Champion Girls Schools, whilst Kelvin Grove won Champion Boys Schools.
