Beach Volleyballers chase final Olympic quota in China

Australia has one final opportunity to qualify an additional men’s beach volleyball team to Paris 2024 when the Asian Continental Cup Finals take place over the next three days in Ningbo, China.

Following last week’s announcement that Thomas Hodges, Zachery Schubert, Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy had been selected to compete at next month’s Olympic Games, final qualification spots are up for grabs at continental events around the globe this week.

Australia’s men qualified for the Continental Cup Finals courtesy of their victory at the event in 2021, which saw Chris McHugh and Damian Schumann go on to compete in Tokyo.

With Schubert and Hodges unable to earn another quota for Australia, two men’s teams have been named for the Continental Cup:

  • Mark Nicolaidis & Izac Carracher
  • Paul Burnett & Jack Pearse

Chris McHugh and D’Artagnan Potts are reserves.

Australia’s campaign gets underway today against Qatar, with semi-finals on Saturday and the final on Sunday.

A best-of-three format will decide each playoff, with two wins required to progress to the next round.

Australia’s women are not competing this weekend, having been eliminated in Oceania qualifying last September.
