Mariafe & Taliqua finish fourth at Beach Pro Tour Finals
Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy have wrapped up another strong season with fourth place at the Beach Pro Tour Finals in Doha.
Despite losing their final pool match on Friday, the Olympic silver medallists still finished on top of their pool, sending them straight into the semi-finals where they took USA’s Kristen Nuth and Taryn Kloth.
Having faced off seven times already this season, the two teams met in the pool round where the Aussies broke a five-match losing run to win in straight sets.
In the semi-final, the first set was in the balance at 19-all before the Americans went back-to-back to claim the early advantage.
The second set was also on even footing before Nuss and Kloth went on an eight-point streak to set up a match winning lead.
The bronze medal match saw the Australians up against top seeds Ana Patricia Silva Ramos and Eduarda Santos Lisboa.
The Brazilians defeated Artacho del Solar and Clancy in the World Championships semi-finals in October and held a 4-3 head-to-head advantage coming into the encounter.
Leading 11-10 in a hard-fought first set, the 2022 World Champions won 10 of the next 13 points to streak to the early lead.
At 9-all in the second, it was the Australians turn to go on a defining run with four straight points setting the stage for a 21-18 set win.
Down 5-6 in the decider, the Brazilians won six of the next eight points to lead 11-8, and when the two sides traded the next eight points, they took the final step on the podium.
For Artacho del Solar and Clancy, it was their second straight fourth place finish at the Tour Finals and comes off the back of a fourth place at World Championships.
They finish their 2023 campaign with three Beach Pro Tour Elite16 podiums and no results outside the top 10.
