North Queensland’s quest for gold at Schools Cup
As the weather brought more rain and windy conditions to Coolangatta Beach for the second day of the Australian Beach Volleyball Schools Cup, athletes from schools across the country gave it their all.
Competing in the Year 12 Girls pairs division are Kirra White and Boudicca Fraser-Skeath from Cairns, who are looking to finish with a gold in their final year of competition.
“It feels really good to be down here at Coolangatta competing at Schools Cup,” Kirra said.
“It’s good to get different comps down here, we don’t have any competitions in Cairns, so it’s very different and a great experience for us.
“It’s a bit sad that it’s raining, but we’re still able to compete, so it’s good.”
“I think it is awesome – I really enjoy playing against teams that want to play the sport, and everyone down here this weekend loves volleyball,” Boudicca said.
“We play volleyball up in Cairns, but we’re one of the main teams so it’s great to come back down for our second Schools Cup and compete against all these different schools.”
As the only North Queensland school competing this year, Kirra feels lucky that her school and coaches are able to support their participation in these events.
“It is really good to come down from Cairns,” Kirra said.
“I know other teams from other schools up there wanted to come, but they weren’t able to be supported.
“So it is amazing that we have our coach who wants to come and support us – hooray!”
Boudicca Fraser-Skeath is coming off a week of competition representing Queensland in the Australian Youth Beach Volleyball Championships, and is excited to be able to keep the fun going at Schools Cup.
“It was such a great week, with all the different states, and now all the schools are here,” Boudicca said.
“It is amazing to see how many people want to play, and the Youth Champs was such a high level of competition and games – one of the best I’ve been involved with.
“At the Schools Cup this week, we are so far undefeated and after getting gold in the Year 11 division (last year) it would be incredible to go back-to-back.”
