Volleyroos look to first game against Uzbekistan

The Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball Championships get underway today, with Australia set to face Uzbekistan in the opening match at 6.30pm AEST.

The Asian Championships will be the first time that Australia will play together as a team since the 2021 Volleyball Nations League in Italy in June.

The top two teams from the Asian Championships will qualify for the 2022 World Championships, set to be held in Russia.

But with qualification for the 2022 World Championships on the line, the Volleyroos have made their intent clear for the tournament – go one better than last time, when they finished second to Iran.

Volleyroos co-captain Luke Perry said the team are feeling ready for the challenge that lies ahead.

“The first game is the first step of the process to achieving our goal,” Perry said.

“We are hungry and keen to get started. With World Championships qualification up for grabs, there’s something more to this tournament,” he said.

The team has welcomed back Thomas Edgar, Max Staples, Curtis Stockton and Thomas Hodges, which will be an added bonus according to assistant coach Luke Reynolds.

“Sunday marks the opening match in the Championships, this will be the first test for our newly rejuvenated Volleyroos team,” Reynolds said.

“It is the perfect chance for them to show off the hard work the team put in during the Canberra camp,” he said.
