In-form Aussies looking to shine in the Philippines

The final Beach Pro Tour Challenge event for 2023 is in the Philippines this week with three Australian teams competing in Nuvali.

Georgia Johnson and Jasmine Fleming will take to qualifying later today, as will Mark Nicolaidis and Izac Carracher. They will be hoping to win their way through to join Zac Schubert and Tom Hodges who are already in the main draw.

Both teams entering qualifying do so with strong form behind them.

At the previous Challenge tournament in Thailand less than two weeks ago, Nicolaidis and Carracher achieved their best result on the Beach Pro Tour when they played off for the bronze medal.

Johnson and Fleming have headed to the Philippines after an incredible two weeks at Geelong Beach Volleyfest.

In the space of ten days, Johnson and Fleming were undefeated in ten straight matches, dropping just two of 22 sets on their way to tournament victories in the opening round of the Australian Beach Volleyball Tour followed by their first gold medal in a Beach Pro Tour event.

Looking to continue their strong form, they know that competition this week will be a step up as they play their third Challenge-level event together.

“We’re very happy and proud of our efforts over the last couple of weeks,” said Johnson. “A big thank you to Volleyball Australia, volunteers and our support staff.

“The national tour and Beach Pro Tour were great preparation for this upcoming event, and we are looking to keep the wins coming against stronger opponents.”

Schubert and Hodges also enter the tournament in good touch, taking home a bronze medal, top five and equal ninth place from their last three Beach Pro Tour Challenge events.

Qualifying takes place on Thursday, where it will take two victories to earn a place in the main draw.

Pool matches follow on Friday, before the elimination phases take place over the weekend.

The event is the 50th and final stop on the 2023 Beach Pro Tour ahead of the Tour Finals in Doha from 6 December.
